Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh finished second at the Diamond League meeting in London, losing out to her main rival Nicola Olyslagers. Both athletes cleared 2.01 m, but the Australian claimed victory thanks to fewer failed attempts.
For the reigning world record holder, this was her fourth competition of the outdoor season and her second Diamond League appearance following victory in Rabat. Mahuchikh arrived in London after a successful performance at the Ukrainian Championships in Lviv and a training camp in Lutsk. Meanwhile, another Ukrainian athlete, Iryna Herashchenko, missed the event due to visa-related issues.
Mahuchikh opened her competition at 1.93 m, clearing the height on her second attempt. She also needed two attempts at 1.96 m, while Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson were flawless.
At 1.99 m, the battle for victory narrowed to a few contenders, but only Australia's Nicola Olyslagers cleared the bar on her first attempt. Mahuchikh succeeded on her second, which ultimately proved decisive in the fight for first place.
At 2.01 m, both athletes failed twice before clearing the height on their third attempts. For Yaroslava, this became her best outdoor result of the season.
The bar was then raised to 2.03 m, matching the best result in the world this season. However, neither Mahuchikh nor Olyslagers managed to clear it. Thanks to her advantage in the number of attempts at the previous heights, the Australian celebrated victory, while the Ukrainian finished in second place.
