Spain etched its name into FIFA World Cup history by setting a unique record. Following a 1-0 victory over Portugal in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, La Roja became the first team ever to record six consecutive World Cup matches without conceding a goal.
Before this achievement, Spain shared the record with Italy and Switzerland, but victory in the Iberian derby allowed them to take sole possession of the all-time mark.
The last time Spain conceded a goal at a FIFA World Cup was on December 1, 2022, when they lost to Japan in the group stage of the tournament in Qatar. Since then, the team has kept six consecutive World Cup clean sheets.
Spain's World Cup clean sheet streak:
- December 6, 2022 — Morocco vs Spain 0:0 (Morocco won 3:0 on penalties)
- June 15, 2026 — Spain vs Cape Verde 0:0
- June 21, 2026 — Saudi Arabia vs Spain 0:4
- June 27, 2026 — Uruguay vs Spain 0:1
- July 2, 2026 — Spain vs Austria 3:0
- July 6, 2026 — Portugal vs Spain 0:1
Thanks to the victory over Portugal, Luis de la Fuente's team reached the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2010. It was at the tournament in South Africa that Spain won its only World Cup title.
Spain will play its next match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on July 10 in Inglewood, where it will face Belgium for a place in the semi-finals.
