South Korea, the mecca of esports, will boycott the 2026 Esports Nations Cup due to a serious dispute with the tournament organizers. According to Korean and English-language sources, the key reason was interference in the process of selecting the national team.
Specifically, the organizers attempted to influence player selection and promote certain candidates for the team roster. This approach drew a sharp reaction from the Korea e-Sports Association (KeSPA), which traditionally has full control over player selection for international tournaments.
According to sources close to the situation, interference in the formation of the national team was viewed as a violation of the basic principles of international competition. In Korea, it is emphasized that each country has its own selection system, and external influence on this process is unacceptable.
As a result, KeSPA refused to continue cooperating with the tournament organizers. The Korean Olympic Committee also supported the association’s position. It was also emphasized that only an officially formed national team can represent the country on the international stage. Any alternative lineups will not have the right to use the name “Team Korea” or national symbols.
Despite this, the organizers of the Esports Nations Cup have not ruled out the participation of Korean players in the tournament. According to them, they may collaborate directly with esports athletes, bypassing the national federation. Such a scenario only exacerbates the conflict and calls into question the status of Korean participation.
The Esports Nations Cup 2026 is positioned as a large-scale international national team tournament in which over 100 countries are expected to participate. However, even before the event began, it faced serious reputational issues.
The situation surrounding South Korea could set a precedent and influence other countries’ attitudes toward the tournament. If the conflict is not resolved, the ENC risks losing one of its key participants and suffering a serious blow to its legitimacy.
