The jackpot of the US Powerball lottery reached $1.1bn after 43 consecutive draws without a winner — the longest winless streak in the game’s history, Forbes reports. The prize became the second-largest in 2025 and the sixth-largest in Powerball’s history since 1992.
In the previous drawing, no ticket matched the winning combination (1, 28, 31, 57, 58 and Powerball 6), so the amount will roll over to the next draw.
The winner will be able to choose a one-time payout of $503.4m or a 30-year annuity totaling $1.1bn. After federal taxes, the lump-sum payout could drop to about $317m, while the annuity would provide about $23m per year after taxes. Additional state taxes may apply — from zero in California and Florida to 10.9% in New York.
Experts note that such a large jackpot traditionally leads to higher ticket sales and increased media attention.
