French club Marseille may be barred from participating in European competitions during the 2026/27 season due to a possible violation of financial fair play regulations.
According to L'Équipe, the club’s cumulative losses over the past three years amounted to approximately 157 million euros. At the same time, in 2022, Marseille signed a financial stabilization agreement with UEFA, which stipulated a limit on losses of 60 million euros over a three-year period.
Due to a significant overshoot of the permissible limit, UEFA’s financial authorities will review the French club’s case in the coming days. Among the possible sanctions under consideration is even the team’s exclusion from European club competitions.
At the end of the Ligue 1 season, Marseille earned 59 points and finished in fifth place, which allowed the team to qualify for the Europa League. However, the club’s future in European competitions will now depend not only on results on the field but also on UEFA’s decision regarding compliance with financial regulations.
