The International Olympic Committee approved the updated sports program for the 2030 Winter Olympic Games, which will be held in the French Alps. The decision was made by the IOC Executive Board as part of its review of the Olympic program.

The changes affect several winter sports. A total of 16 new events have been added to the Olympic program, while Nordic combined has been completely removed from the competition schedule.

Which new events will be introduced at the 2030 Winter Olympics?

The changes affect several sports:

  • Biathlon — the single mixed relay has been added to the program.
  • Figure skating — the Synchro9 event will debut, a new synchronized skating format featuring teams of nine athletes.
  • Speed skating — men's and women's team sprint events have been added.
  • Freeride — will make its Olympic debut. Medals will be awarded in men's and women's competitions on natural mountain terrain in both skiing and snowboarding.
  • Freestyle skiing — a mixed team ski cross event has been added.
  • Snowboarding — a mixed team parallel slalom event will debut.
  • Ski jumping — women will compete in the Super Team event for the first time.
  • Ski mountaineering — the program will include men's and women's individual races, men's and women's sprints, as well as a mixed relay.

Nordic combined will no longer be part of the Olympic program.

At the same time, the IOC decided to remove Nordic combined from the program of the 2030 Winter Olympic Games.

This sport had been included at every Winter Olympic Games since 1924 and remained the only discipline contested exclusively by men.

A total of 126 medal events will be contested in the French Alps: 56 women's events, 55 men's events, and 15 mixed events.

A total of 3,046 athletes are expected to compete — 1,525 women and 1,521 men — making the 2030 Winter Olympics the first in history with virtually equal representation of male and female athletes.
