The strongest national teams of Europe and South America—Spain and Argentina—will meet in a head-to-head showdown called the Finalissima in March next year.
This was reported on UEFA’s official website.
When and where the match will take place
Spain, the Euro 2024 champions, and Argentina, the Copa América winners of the same year, will meet on March 27, 2026.
The match will be held at Lusail National Stadium in Lusail, Qatar. Kick-off is scheduled for 20:00 Kyiv time.
The parties could not agree on a date for a long time, looking for a window in the packed international calendar. Eventually, UEFA and CONMEBOL, together with the Royal Spanish Football Federation and the Argentine Football Association, found an option that suited everyone.
Argentina are the current holders of the Finalissima title. In June 2022 in London, they thrashed the strongest European team at the time—Italy—by a score of 3:0.
What is the Finalissima
A football tournament for national teams played as a single match between the reigning champions of Europe and South America.
Originally, the competition was organized under FIFA in 1985 and 1993 and was called the Artemio Franchi Trophy. It was later discontinued.
In 2022, the tournament was revived through the joint efforts of UEFA and CONMEBOL.
Finalissima (Artemio Franchi Trophy): all finals
1985 (Paris). France – Uruguay – 2:0
1993 (Buenos Aires). Argentina – Denmark – 1:1, on penalties – 5:4
2022 (London) Argentina – Italy – 3:0
In 2026, the showdown will be played on neutral ground for the first time—in Asia. Note that it was at the Lusail venue that Argentina won the 2022 World Cup title, beating France in the final (3:3, on penalties – 4:2).
