Tournament operator ESL has updated its rules regarding participant withdrawals, significantly strengthening potential sanctions. According to the regulations, a team or player is considered to have withdrawn if they leave an event during the active stage, between stages (including qualifiers), or after officially accepting an invitation.

In such cases, the participant forfeits all prize money earned at the tournament and may also be fined. ESL reserves the right to impose sanctions not only on the team, but also on the organization and all its members — including fines, demotion in tournament tiers, or other disciplinary measures. Penalties may be applied immediately or within 365 days at subsequent events.

It is also specified that in the event of a withdrawal, the team automatically receives a ban for the next tournament of the same tier. For example, if a team withdraws from a Tier 1 event, it will not be able to participate in the next Tier 1 tournament for which it would otherwise have received an invitation.

In addition, the withdrawing team is required to cover replacement costs, including airfare for the substitute participant and any additional expenses. If ESL is unable to find a replacement, all matches of the withdrawing team will be recorded as forfeits.

The regulations also предусматривают stricter penalties in cases of late withdrawals or situations where a replacement significantly reduces the level of competition. This may include increased fines, suspension from future tournaments, or complete exclusion from the invitation system.

At the same time, ESL allows for sanctions to be waived in exceptional cases. These include:

  • medical emergencies — provided a certificate from a licensed physician confirming the inability to travel;
  • visa issues — with official documentation of visa refusal for reasons beyond the participant’s control (for example, not due to application errors).

Teams will also not be penalized if they withdraw from a tournament due to another team from the same organization qualifying for the same event.

The new rules aim to improve tournament stability and reduce the number of sudden withdrawals that affect the competitive integrity of events.
