English club Chelsea may terminate its contract with Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk, according to The Athletic.
Mudryk received a four-year ban from the English Football Association, which is the maximum possible penalty. The FA charged Mudryk with violating anti-doping rules in June 2025. However, the Ukrainian was not sentenced until April 2026.
As reported by The Athletic, standard contracts for English Premier League players include a clause regarding “gross misconduct.” The use of banned substances, for which Mudryk was suspended for four years, falls under this definition, as stipulated by the rules of the English Football Association. Thus, Chelsea will have the right to terminate the contract with the Ukrainian player by invoking this clause.

If the club decides to terminate the contract early, the Londoners will have to give Mudryk two weeks’ notice and pay him his salary for that period.
At the same time, Chelsea could choose to keep the Ukrainian player. Even if his appeal is unsuccessful, the four-year ban, starting from the date of his provisional suspension in 2024, will last only until the end of 2028, leaving several years remaining on his contract. The club could also try to negotiate a new deal with a lower salary for the duration of the suspension, but the decision to sign it would remain up to Mudryk.
Mudryk has already filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the suspension verdict. The organization has not yet set a date for the hearing in the Ukrainian’s case.
