Ahead of the next stage of gubernatorial elections in Alabama, one candidate is making a bold push to expand the state's gambling market, placing the lottery issue at the center of his platform.

Democrat Phillip Ensler, a current member of the Alabama House of Representatives, officially announced his candidacy for lieutenant governor, hoping to challenge the current administration and assume the state's second-highest office.

Alabama's new political figure envisions the future of the state lottery

As one of the youngest elected politicians, Ensler has already established himself as a proponent of fresh ideas in the legislature, not avoiding unconventional solutions. In this campaign, he is supported by former U.S. Senator Doug Jones — also a Democrat — who is running for the office currently held by Kay Ivey.

Ensler has outlined the key directions of his upcoming program. He stated that he will focus on real socio-economic issues — particularly the housing market crisis — instead of debates around DEI, book bans in schools and libraries, or renaming the Gulf of Mexico. With this rhetoric, he openly criticizes the current Republican Party course influenced by Donald Trump.

In addition to a broader political agenda, Ensler plans to address two gambling issues: the absence of a state lottery in Alabama — one of the few states without one — and the possibility of legalizing sports betting.

The politician believes that launching a lottery could significantly and positively impact the state budget, helping to close financial gaps.

"I hear this from people across Alabama — Democrats and Republicans, white and Black, less and more affluent: everyone says it’s madness not to have a state lottery. People cross state lines to buy lottery tickets, and we lose hundreds of millions of dollars that could go to education or healthcare," Ensler told Alabama Political Reporter.

Statewide support is required for change

Lotteries are traditionally used by states to fund socially important programs and are considered one of the least risky forms of gambling in terms of addiction.

Meanwhile, Alabama has not yet legalized sports betting. Although Ensler has not signaled an intent to rapidly change the situation, individual legislators have repeatedly proposed relevant initiatives.

In any case, expanding the gambling market will likely require a statewide referendum, as it would necessitate amendments to the Alabama constitution.

It is worth noting that calls to legalize sports betting are not limited to Democrats: in October, Donald Trump Jr., son of the current U.S. president, also joined the discussion.
